ABSTRACT
Metal cutting processes still represent the largest class of manufacturing operations. Turning is the most commonly employed material removal process. One of the main features of any material removal process is that a significant portion of the mechanical energy generated by the interaction of the tool and the workpiece is converted into heat, which has a large effect on the life of the cutting tools used to cut the machined parts. The total amount of heat generated during cutting is the combination of the heat of the chips, the tool, and the workpiece. The amount of heat created is determined by the speed, feed, and depth of cut.
This research focuses on analysis of the thermal field of the oblique machining process. Finite element method (FEM) software DEFORM 3D V10.2 was used together with experimental work carried out using infrared image equipment, which include both hardware and software. The temperature distribution measurement carried out in the deformation zone in 3D cutting process. The thermal experiments are conducted with two different materials; AA6063-T6 and AISI 316, different tool obliquity, cutting speeds, and feed rates. The results of the high precision infrared thermal measurements are compared with simulation results, considering the maximum and the mean temperatures in the tool–chip interface zone and the temperature distributions on the tool take face. The results show that the temperature relatively decreased when tool obliquity increase at different cutting speeds and feed rates, also it is found that the mean tool rake face temperature distribution decrease with increase tool obliquity which lead to enhance the tool wear and tool life during the machining process.
